Germany: Loretta Bar – Hidden treasure in Glockenbach Viertel

Loretta Bar

Address: Müllerstraße 50, 80469 München

Gotta say, Munich has impressed pretty well with all hotspots in town. What I love the most is there are several spots hidden which you could not realise it would either be a bar or a cafe or maybe it could be the big club until you first mistakenly enter or got suggested by local. And that begins the story of Loretta Bar.

You better not try to look for it because there is no name in front and the place is so vivid that makes you wouldn’t figure out where the hell is that bar. I passed by this normal looking café many times on the way to work and never had the urge to go in. But you know, do not judge the appearance. It might not look so vividly beautiful from the outside but somehow it still attracted me by its wildness and simpleness. And there I entered for the first time and fell in love with what they got in there.

A great space with an open bar, it does have the charm even though I wouldn’t call it cosiness or chic. However, what they offer is what interested me the most. You would probably be lost in the drink menu because there are quite a lot to look at. The question is: how do they manage to make all those drinks? Normally I wouldn’t be so happy about it because I would be so confused what to choose and doubting always comes along. Right at that moment, I just mumbled myself: CRAZY! Drinks are so interesting here.  It took me about 3 visits to actually taste most of special cocktails and liquor in Loretta. Now I sound like an alcoholic but no, I just enjoy good drinks every now and then.

Here are some facts:

There are over 90 different kinds of Amero which are imported from Italy
130 different kinds of wine
And bartenders there know them all and are very well-educated on each different liquor

Maybe what made me so excited about those drinks there must be all the experiments they put in each drink and they know how to play with different ingredients – herbs, leaves, flowers, and even wood.

Go look for that bar and enjoy a good drink, guys!

Germany: James T. Hunt Bar – My second living room in Munich

Jame T. Hunt

Address: Schellingstraße 32, 80799 München

Not really a bar hopper but I always appreciate few good glasses of cocktails from time to time. When it comes to cocktails, I want to pay a good amount of money on those. With the experience of bar keeping for the last year, I am even stricter on what I drink. If you ask me about how to make cocktails, to be honest, I did not learn how to do it but just by following recipe and shaking it hard. But how to taste cocktails, I am sure you can trust what I am about to tell you.

It was the middle of the week but I was asked to go out for some drinks at James T. Hunt bar. I never care which day it is to have a good drink because it can always push your spirit and nothing is wrong with a bit of alcohol. Kinda cool that the bar is so vivid but at the same time hidden. I crossed by Schellingstrasse for millions times but never really knew that there was a chic bar standing there. What is James T. Hunt? I don’t really know and don’t even have the urge to ask. But it has got me hooked since the very first time. The fact that I was sitting in a cosy place with great interior, you know me, I wouldn’t trade it for anything else. In the concept of a small living room, James T. Hunt has pull out its friendly atmosphere that people come here could feel like at home. I was, in that case, feeling too much at home that I lost the time. Or was that because those cocktails were hitting on me because to be honest, I did not just take one.

I got my first sip on the Berry Bomb and couldn’t slow myself down. It was quite a different taste compared to other cocktails I had tried, but it was certainly great. I tried to figure out what was wrong with my drink, why was it so good but so strange at the same time. Until the last drop of that Cherry Bomb in the bottom of the glass, I still couldn’t figure it out. All I tasted was absolutely damn fine alcohol with a playful taste but still yet not know what. There came my second cocktail. I think everyone was wondering what was in my mind because of my dull face. YES! I GOT IT! It was not sweet! I realised how we had always been tricked by the sweetness in the cocktails that they fooled your mind that cocktails need to be sweet. Maybe I am the only fool here. However, I found out there was no sugar in my drink and I asked Simon – the bar chef to be sure. A man who can make you a good drink, you just have to watch out before you fall in love with him. No, I am just kidding but what I am talking about is, alcohol could make you happy and a man who knows how to make good one for you…? Back to the cocktails story, I suppose you all have this expectation of sweetness when you order a cocktail. Maybe you do not notice it but your brain has kept a note for you without your permission. Simon shared with me that all sirups added in the cocktails are homemade from fresh ingredients. All the magic is created by this man.

If you love cocktails, come to have a try when you are around in Munich. If you like, come again! That how I did and now I have made it my second living room. A great place to hang and beautiful drinks are something you cannot ask for more. A good company maybe, but you won’t even feel lonely in James T. Hunt. You should find out yourself why!

Germany: The Flushing Meadows Hotel – A Performance of Interior Design

Pleasure, comfort and relaxation are some criteria that people look for in every accommodation. Maybe there is only one difference between us – either luxury or affordability. However, there is a place would win over either you look for any of those because they do not only satisfy your expectations in a hotel, they also make you feel at home in many ways in a new land. There it is, in the heart of Munich, hidden somewhere along the Isar lake, The Flushing Meadows Hotel.

Sometimes you just want to be present but The Flushing Meadows seems to prefer to be hidden. You might cross by the hotel many times but you would not recognise that there is such a cool accommodation above you. Entering the silver door and getting to the 4th floor, there The Flushing Meadows has been hiding.

They are a comparatively small sized hotel in Munich but they provide you much more than a place to sleep. With 16 rooms offered but they all pull out their own uniqueness. Each room that you might stay would tell a different story. The Flushing Meadows offer you 2 different kinds of accommodation – Loft Studio and Penthouse – and for sure, in any room you are about to enter would wow you. ‘Munich’ is the main statement of the accommodation. Many Münchner (Munich’s people) have joined hands to decorate the rooms – no matters if it is an influencer, a celebrity or just a local person from Munich. That’s one highlight that The Flushing Meadows has lured my attention.

An Art Piece

Now comes my favourite part!
I got a chance to visit some rooms which were not being used at that moment. By then, they blew my mind. The interior is amazingly ‘wunderschön’ that if you are a person who is into design, you would be bounce off the walls. Every room has a  breeze of freshness and tastefulness with great pieces of design products. I jumped off the chair when I saw Rietveld designed chairs standing in the room 306, decorated by Norbert Wangen – a designer from Vienna.

With a different theme, different taste from different people, being in The Flushing Meadows’ rooms feels like being in an art showroom. It could be just me but I was so fascinated and felt like I was staying in the room in Bauhaus again.

Maybe you would always expect to have a good service in hotels so everyone must be friendly. Partly true! However, it is more important that you feel at home and that is what you would find in The Flushing Meadows Hotel. In most hotels, besides the rooms themselves, the space that you normally get is either a formal lounge or a dining area. But it is something you would find differently in Flushing Meadows. When you first enter the hotel, what you see is an open bar. There is no lobby and the space is likely small and the bar has turned into a cosy living-room which is just like a home. There – the couch, the fireplace and a plus with a terrace which has a view of  St. Maximilian Cathedral. Their main objective is to create an atmosphere for travellers to ‘feel themselves at home’.

Just as my observation, staff is more like families to each other. And that creates the home-like feeling! It is great just to sit there for hours and being surrounded by great people. Most people working there that I have met are open and friendly. You could certainly have a chit-chat with them and they could be your ‘temporary friends’ during your stay (well, you never know what that relationship could turn into). DSC_0629

The bar is open for everyone, not only for guests staying at the hotel. In the evening, the bar turns into a great space for everyone to hang out and enjoy some delish drinks. The atmosphere in the evening is not much different from during the day except for having more people. Then, it looks like a house party but in a more classy environment.
Why do I say CREATIVITY? That is what something you are about to find out. The drink menu is fascinating with some cocktails you might have never tried, or you might have but nothing like this. Most cocktails are original but with a touch of creativity and personality. It is best to ask them what you should order because they would make for you the drink fits your taste perfectly.

I got a chance to have a chat with Robin, the Bar Manager, who will turn your drinks into the most delightful experience. He is just in his 20 and and currently managing the bar at The Flushing Meadows. You wouldn’t expect that he is still a student in his Chef’s uniform. He has worked there since the start (September 2014) till now, started as a waiter and now a Bar Manager. With all the knowledge about bar keeping, he has mastered the creation of drinks. Thanks to Robin, I had a pleasant visit at the bar and delight cocktails that I find them as drinks with a touch of science and art.
